Horses have always been part of my life. I started riding when I was 2ys old, and i've never stopped since. My childhood was spent competing at local level, and hunting. I did everything I could possibly do with a pony from gymkhana games to riding side saddle. From an early age I always loved Eventing. Lucinda Green and Virginia Leng (Elliot now) were my heroines, and going to Burghley Horse Trials was the highlight of my year. My parents farmed in Quorn Monday Hunting country, so Hunting was part of growing up. Mum and Dad hunted, as did Gran ( Dads Mother). My Gran was a big influence in the beginning and has always keenly followed and supported my career. I have been very fortunate that Mum and Dad have a keen interest in horses. During my childhood they spent endless Sundays at shows with me, and drove me and my pony miles and miles to various competitions. We never travelled much futher an an hour away... but we did it alot of times! Mum and Dad were 100% behind me, and Mum kept me positive and motivated when things didn't go to plan! (She still does!) I had some good ponies, and had great success at local level, and good fun with The Pony Club. My first horse was called Prince of Thieves IV. He had done a bit of showjumping before we bought him, and had a good jump, but not an easy temperament. When I was 15 I registered him to go Eventing straight away. (I was very keen!) He would go well at Pre Novice level, but at Novice I would get eliminated on the XC at coffin fences, or jumping in to darkness. After a bit of training, we overcame these problems, and I learnt to ride him better. Sadly at Belton Novice in 97 he had a freak accident and broke his neck. It was the worst thing that had ever happened to me, and I questioned my desire to ride again, but once back in the saddle my confidence began to grow, and Weston Miskris (Krissy) made me believe in myself again. My first pony. 'Teddy' ......where it all began. I enjoyed a lot of success with Weston Miskris early in my career in Eventing. She made winning easy, and took me places I had only dreamed of going. We won the JRN, Novice Riders, and Junior National Championships. We led Britain to the Gold medal by winning the individual Silver Medal at the Junior European Championships. This success made me hungry for more, although I knew I still had a lot to learn. After leaving school, a gap year turned in to three years with horses and learning the trade with various professionals. Rightly or wrongly I didn’t ever take up my place at Nottingham University to study Graphic Design. (If I had I could have designed my own website!) Instead I worked with British Team Trainer Kenneth Clawson, British Team Selector (junior and senior) Mandy Stibbe, Event Rider, Young horse producer, Dressage trainer and International Judge Judy Bradwell plus vet, breeder and Show Jumping dealer Jan Greve in Holland. I also spent free Mondays and Fridays hunting horses for Joss and Nicky Hanbury. During this time I learnt so much by riding so many different horses. I’d had valuable experience breaking-in, producing, and competing. I returned to my family home and set up my business in 2003. I bought, produced, and sold horses, and took in horses for schooling and competing. During that time I was fortunate to own and ride Bridgestone who completed both Badminton and Burghley. Bridgestone had suffered soundness issues all the time I’d had him, and sadly that prevented him going to the Young Rider Europeans. Having already secured my 4* qualifications from a successful Bramham, my vet suggested I rested him for a few months then got him fit for Badminton, only running him in one Intermediate event before hand. All my preparations were done at home, and my one prep run had gone well at Weston Park. I had ridden another horse in open team chases so I was up to speed, as the other eventers at home were all Pre novices! Badminton was a success, and Bridgestone went on to do Burghley, and another Badminton without another lame step, and just one prep run. Sadly at his second Badminton a chipped stifle meant we had to withdraw from Sunday’s trot up and take him to Newmarket to be operated on. During recovery Bridgestone broke his other leg and had to be put down. It was a sad end for my brave star. I bought my current premises at Stathern in February 2006 thanks to some lovely horses I had success competing and sold; General Outlook, Bullawayo, Nordic Gent, Impeccable, Be My Guest II, and All’s Fair. It was very sad to sell them, but all have gone on to be Advanced Eventers in England and America. . I have had the pleasure of working with so many talented horses and have great memories of them. I find it very rewarding to produce them from wobbly youngsters to fine athletes. I’m now building a team of horsepower and people that will hopefully be the key to my success at senior level. I’m desperate to ride at the top level again, and have a team of horses continually coming up through the grades.
One of my ambitions is to gain a place on the British squad, and represent Team GB at Olympic, World and European Championships.
